A New Orleans Tradition
Brennan’s Restaurant is a New Orleans French Quarter landmark, and partaking of their famous breakfast is more an event than a simple meal. Everything about Brennan’s is special, from the elaborate egg creations to the waiters who have been there for many years and do not hesitate to recommend the perfect wine with each new dish. Wine with breakfast you ask; but of course, as I have already said, this is not a simple meal but an event. It is to be savored, remembered and most definitely, not repeated anywhere else. There is, after all, only one Brennan’s.
David and I were dining late in the morning with Bonnie Warren, the P.R. representative for the restaurant. This lovely lady, who is herself a New Orleans legend and has been associated with Brennan’s for many years, made sure that our dining experience was not only an event, but an epic gastronomic celebration.
Our waiter, Mario, who had been with the restaurant for many years, brought us Brennan’s specialty drink, A Brandy Milk Punch, which we sipped while contemplating the enormous menu. Bonnie would not let us skip a single course.
I ordered the Turtle Soup and David had the Okra Seafood Gumbo. At this point, Bonnie said to our waiter, Mario, “And we will have an additional order of the Creole Onion Soup and the Oyster Soup. I want our guests to sample as many dishes as possible”. At this point, I should have been forewarned that our “event” could easily turn into an all day affair.
The soup was followed by my order of Eggs Nouvelle Orleans, which were poached eggs served on a bed of crabmeat and topped with a brandy-cream sauce. David decided on the Eggs Hussard which is a Brennan’s original and included a special Marchand de Vin sauce. Bonnie then instructed Mario to also bring us a “half-order” of Oysters Benedict and Eggs Bayou LaFourche. I do not know how often Bonnie repeats this process, but somehow she manages to remain a rather petite lady.
For dessert, we all shared orders of Bannanas Foster, Crepes Fitzgerald and Louisiana Chocolate Pecan Pie. Delicious! Absolutely delicious! I cannot imagine ever again eating so much fantastic food in one meal. Brennan’s also serves dinner, but it could not possibly be as much fun as breakfast.
Needless to say, our meal was not quite what the typical visitor orders, but everyone in the filled to capacity room appeared quite content. The service was excellent and the food was innovative, original and delicious. What more could you expect from any dining experience.
