Mountain Edge Resort and Spa at Sunapee

Discover Excellence

For Relaxing on the Lawn

For Relaxing on the Lawn

Over several crystal clear rivers and through the lush green woods and there you are at Mountain Edge Resort and Spa on the shores of Lake Sunapee and just below the slopes of Mount Sunapee. New Hampshire’s Sunapee Region has been welcoming visitors for more than 100 years, and its newest resort, The Mountain Edge Resort and Spa, is already setting the standard for the next 100 years of vacation fun, excitement, luxury and relaxation.

After a couple of days in the area, I had talked to enough people to realize two things. The majority of the people in the hotel and hospitality industry had been born in the area and never had any reason to leave. They liked the area where they grew up and enjoyed sharing it with visitors. The second thing I noticed was that a great many visitors to the area had established permanent vacation homes for the summer months or for the skiing in the winter. The climate is sublime during the summer and I imagine that those who come in January think the same thing about the gigantic snow drifts…to each his own.

Exactly where is Sunapee? It is located on Route 103 in Newbury, New Hampshire. It is less than two hours from Boston and about three hours from Hartford, Conn. Although it is close to so many major metropolitan areas, once you have left the interstates and discovered the magic of rural New Hampshire, you begin to relax, slow down and leave the tensions of everyday life behind. As you cross and re-cross the meandering rivers, discover the hidden covered bridges and the white church spires peeking from between the leafy-green aspen and fir trees, you find you have gone back in time to a more simple area. Mountain Edge Resort and Spa has managed to insert the ultimate in luxury and modern amenities into an otherwise rustic setting. It is here that the simple pleasures take on a new meaning as you relax and allow yourself to be pampered by hosts, Tom and Kerry Behrens and their capable staff.

The adirondack chalet style architecture of Mountain Edge blends perfectly into the surrounding mountains and trees. As you enter the large, gracious vaulted lobby with its rustic stone and timbers, soft greens, burnished golds and chestnut hues it feels as if you have brought nature inside. The bear cub nestled high in the rafters looking down on you, actually makes you look twice to be sure he has not just wandered in from the woods.

The accommodations at the Inn consist mainly of spacious suites instead of ordinary rooms. Each suite has one or two bedrooms, kitchen, dining area and living room with fireplace. Plenty of room to spread out or stash ski and skating equipment in the winter. The two flat-screen televisions in the bedroom and living room were definitely state of the art, but to be truthful, we kept so busy we hardly had time to notice.
Pet friendly rooms are available upon request.

The lower level of the Inn is taken up with an exercise and fitness center, indoor and outdoor heated pools, a lap pool, sauna, and hot tub. It is also here, on the lower level that you will discover the tranquility and rejuvenating powers of the Spa. The serenity of the elegant treatment rooms, the highly-trained wellness professionals and the finest products and techniques all blend to bring you profound relaxation. Whether you choose the cleansing facial, manicure, pedicure, dead sea mud wrap, hot stone massage , or as I did, the deep therapy massage, you will emerge a new person.- in both body and spirit. While I was there, the spa was in the process of expanding to add hairdressing services, laser and Botox treatments. The spa is open seven days a week.

Because of its isolation and yet convenience, the Mountain Edge Resort and Spa is the perfect choice for a wedding, honeymoon, anniversary or romantic get-away. Just let Kerry know what your interests are or if you are celebrating a special event and she will make sure that your stay at the Inn is perfect.

It is hard to imagine a place so ideally situated that it can truly claim to be an all season resort. The proximity to Mt. Sunapee makes it the perfect choice for a winter vacation. You are literally minutes from the slopes and you are almost certain to find that they are less crowded than most areas. Without leaving the property you can enjoy snow tubing on the long sloping hill nearby which provides an opportunity for entertainment and thrills for kids of all ages. In summer you are within walking distance of Lake Sunapee beach with its swimming beach and boating activities. The Inn will also be glad to help you make arrangements for bicycle tours, horseback riding or golfing at several nearby courses. My husband and I spent a most enjoyable day at the Newport Golf Club. This course has plenty of trees and water to keep things interesting. In the fall the glorious colors tempt you to drive from one small village to another as you ramble through the countryside, stopping to sample the local cuisine. No matter what the time of year, there is always something to do in and around Sunapee and you will find no better place to begin your adventure than Mountian Edge Resort while enjoying this theatre of the seasons. The Mountain Edge Inn truly offers it all.
