I spent several days at this elegant resort in May for the opening of Delphinus Dreams Cancun. This program, the first of its kind in North America, allows guests to observe and interact in the water with the incredibly friendly, beautiful and inquisitive dolphins. As one of their trainers told us, you do not play with the dolphins, they play with you. Swimming with these intelligent and gentle creatures is an experience that I will never forget. Along with several trained professionals, five guests at a time spent almost an hour in close contact with two dolphins. We were allowed to pet them, exchange kisses and observe them as they swam underwater. For those of us who wanted the ultimate experience, and we all did, we were propelled from behind through the water by both dolphins at once. We were amazed and thrilled as they sped incredibly fast and in tandem under the water and around the pool and made perfect contact with our outstretched feet. According to marine mammal specialists, the success of this program is the result of the environment provided and the care received, including veterinary supervision, training, nutrition and the appropriate environment for socialization with both humans and each other. Trained professionals insure that the experience is safe for both the guests and dolphins.

Guests of Dreams Cancun are given priority to participate in this exhilarating event as only a limited number are allowed to interact each day. If additional spaces remain, the experience will be offered to other Cancun visitors and locals as well. Each session is recorded by top-notch digital technology, photography and DVD video services to capture the memorable adventure.

New room categories have been added to the hotel including the pyramid style Deluxe Dolphin View Rooms with private balconies overlooking the dolphin pools so guests can watch the show. It was my privilege to spend two nights in one of these rooms and it was a unique experience. Long after most guests had gone to bed, the tireless dolphins continued to interact with each other as they dove, raced around the pool at incredible speeds and arched gracefully as they sailed through the air. The sounds they made are almost impossible to describe, but they were definitely communicating with each other. I spent several hours after dark in the hammock on the patio of my room with a last glass of wine as I watched them cavort effortlessly and with obvious pleasure.
