The Hotel Daniel In Graz
Rent a Vespa for sightseeing by Ginger Warder
Located within walking distance of the train station in Graz, Austria, The Hotel Daniel has gone from stuffy to stylish with a recent head-to-toe renovation. Looking like an Ikea showroom, the hip loft-style lobby is full of fun sherbet colors and curvy chrome chairs with kitchsy amenities that include a turquoise automat snack machine, a guest computer work station delineated by an Austin Powers white shag rug, an espresso bar, and a small infinity pool as the water feature. Rooms come in two sizes and prices: The smaller Smart room at 59 Euros for two (about $75 US ) is tiny, but creatively functional with built-in furniture and portable closets, and features a voyeuristic glass-walled shower visible from the bed. The larger Loggia at 79 Euros (about $100 US) includes the hearty breakfast buffet, and has a balcony with views of the Old Town, as well as a faux stained-glass view of Graz in the more modest shower stall. Both rooms include CD/DVD/TV and high speed internet, along with rainhead showers and modern modular décor. Aside from the amazingly low rates that cover two guests, unusual in Europe where room charges are normally per person, the biggest attraction at the Daniel are the shiny black Vespas available for city tours or hourly rental starting at 15 Euros (about $19 US). Weekend packages include a 2-hour Vespa tour of Graz, a more traditional guided tour of the Old Town, and the breakfast buffet, starting at 77 Euros per person ($98 US) Europaplatz 1,A-8020 Graz, +43/316/711080 www.hoteldaniel.com
