A Place Where Friends Gather to Enjoy Great Food
The French Quarter of New Orleans is full of great restaurants and fantastic food, but every visitor to this great city should venture at least once, beyond the boundaries of the Quarter. I suggest you try the relaxed atmosphere of the Upperline Restaurant. Proprietor and owner, JoAnn Clevenger, believes that the original meaning of the word “restaurant” was to restore. Restraunts should be more than just a place to find a meal. They should soothe and bolster the weary with comfort and indulgence. JoAnn, who can be seen visiting with guests on most evenings, has used this credo to establish a restaurant featuring great Louisiana food, serious wine and Creole hospitality. It has become a favorite with locals in the community. Visitors are sure to find the relaxed and friendly atmosphere welcome after the hustle, bustle and noise of the city.
The restaurant can easily be reached by the St. Charles Avenue streetcar which makes a stop on Upperline St.just a couple of blocks away. And if you have a car, there is plenty of parking in this quiet neighborhood.
We had to try the fried green tomato with shrimp remoulade as a starter. The recipe used at Upperline was first created in 1992 and this particular appetizer is only available when the tomatoes are at their best. We also tried the crispy Louisiana oysters with celery root remoulade. It was hard to tell which was the better choice.
Following an excellent warm Brie salad with pears, I ordered the specialty of the evening which was Braised Lamb Shank in Burgundy with Saffron Risotto and David settled-on the Roast Duck with Garlic Port and/or Ginger Peach Sauce. We had been eating seafood all week and decided it was time for a change. I have no doubt that every entrée on the menu would have been interesting and innovative. JoAnn recommended a bottle of red wine and it was a perfect match.
As the ideal ending to a lovely evening we ended our meal with Crème Brulee with Crushed Pralines and Upperline Warm Louisiana Pecan Pie.
Perhaps if I had to choose just one restaurant in New Orleans, it would be Upperline. The food and service were both great, but it is the fact that the patrons all looked like they were enjoying their dining experience. They were friends and neighbors and they had chosen Upperline to spend a little quality time. JoAnn moved easily from table to table throughout the evening welcoming everyone and making suggestions when needed. There was nothing stuffy about this restaurant We had been soothed, entertained and well fed.
