The Soniat House Hotel, 1133 Chartres Street

Located in the quiet residential section of the French Quarter, the Soniat House offers an authentic New Orleans experience. Behind the unpretentious, plain façade over- hung with balconies covered with cascading flowers, is an exquisite boutique hotel. The door was locked and when I rang the bell, a very pleasant woman assured me that I was expected and admitted me to the cool shade of the interior courtyard patio. Summer flowers and tropical greenery shared the space with a gently falling fountain and a number of small tables where guests could relax. Our room was at the back of the garden and I knew immediately that we had chosen the right hotel. The guest room was furnished with period antiques in rich colors and luxury fabrics including Egyptian cotton sheets and goosedown pillows. The entire ambiance exuded Old World charm and promised to be a relaxing haven from the busy offerings of the French Quarter just outside the doors.

The Soniat House is the most acclaimed luxury boutique hotel in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Travel and Leisure once called it “one of the best hotels in the world.”

The hotel was created twenty years ago by combining three historic Creole town-houses in the quiet residential section of the French Quarter. It has since won many awards and national praise for its sensitive design and the striking taste of the guest rooms. And all of this grandeur is typically concealed beyond the plain façade that is presented to the casual tourist who passes by without even a glance. The hotel is small and only those few who seek the very best are admitted beyond its portals.

Breakfast, served on the patio, is a daily rite with Creole café au lait and hot southern biscuits accompanied by homemade strawberry jam. The patio itself is a work of art with spiral stairs, balconies and the courtyard full of lush sweet olive, magnolia, guava and ginger.

In the lovely salon, there is an “honor bar” which is stocked with premium liquors, wines and champagne. There is also a computer for the use of guests and a number of very good books picturing the many public and hidden splendors’ of New Orleans.

Annother feature of the Soniat House that is a must for those who bring their cars to the city is a locked and very secure parking area.
During your stay, you car is locked in a parking area that is not visible to the public passing by on the street. When you want to use the car, it is delivered to a special hotel parking space directly in front of the hotel.

When you enter Soniat House Hotel, you have really arrived in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
