Coral Gables

I never believed there were any other cities in Florida that could provide more pleasure than Miami. My visits to the sunshine state have always centered on South Beach and the pursuit of Mojitos. However, a recent trip to Coral Gables gave me a new perspective. If Miami represents the wild and crazy one in the family, Coral Gables, would be the sophisticated sister. This small cultural community is just twenty minutes from Miami’s famed South Beach and offers a plethora of luxurious options for fun in the sun.

Whether your vice is shopping or culinary delights Coral Gables has you covered. It is home to the “Miracle Mile, it’s downtown shopping mecca with more than 140 dining establishments and gourmet shops all within walking distance.

You can find the perfect bridal gown for your special day, try J. Del Olmo Every Girl's Dream Bridal Salon, find a vintage bottle of wine visit: Estate Wines & Gourmet Foods or purchase a spy kit for post nuptial activities at Spy World.

After a full day of shopping, you can enjoy a night of fine dining with many exquisite restaurants to choose from. You can go around the world and back with with culinary choices that include Columbian, Asian or traditional American dishes at the many restaurants that help the city earn it’s reputation as a cultural melting pot.

When it comes to lodging Coral Gables has many elegant options for a home away from home. Play out your own Harlequin romance novel at the Hyatt Regency of Coral Gables with over 50 specialty suites to choose from. My favorite is the Merrick Suite, a stylish 620-sq.-ft. suite offering Mediterranean decor with French doors opening onto a balcony overlooking the pool, a generous desk with wireless Internet access and living area with half bath. A separate bedroom area includes one king bed and marble bath featuring Portico bath amenities.

In addition the hotel features Two Sisters Restaurant which serves up a fusion of Florida and European. Executive Chef Joseph Bidwell recommends the Maui Maui, but I feel in love with their pasta and revolving lemonade menu. Bar 50 lounge offers nightly entertainment in a sophisticated atmosphere.

Whether your visit to “The Gables” is business or pleasure you will find plenty of entertainment options, be sure to visit the Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre and the historical Venetian Pool. Also, Miami’s beaches are only a short drive away; spend an afternoon people watching, or scuba diving. However, for a truly unforgettable experience, visit Miami Beach Parasail, miamibeachparasail.com. They offer parasailing above the crystal clear waters of Southbeach for a perfect panoramic view of the sun city.
