The Mysterious Black Diamonds of France
Discovering the Truffle
One of the most exclusive delicacies in the world, the black truffle, has long been shrouded in mystery and scandal. The Drome region in France is one of the rare locations where this fragrant tuber can be found and every year from November to May, truffle fever abounds. Truffles are the topic of conversation in restaurants and markets throughout France.
France Journeys has designed a special small group tour to introduce visitors to the mystery of the truffle. While staying in luxurious accommodations in the area, you will visit the world’s largest truffle market in Richerenches and you will have a chance to go truffle hunting with specially trained dogs. The dogs, by the way, have replaced the traditional pigs for a very good reason. The dogs are easier to control and eat fewer of the truffles. This is very important since truffles, ounce per ounce, are the most expensive food in the world.
The select few on these December tours will also have a chance to taste some of the phenomenal regional wines and participate in cooking classes dedicated to the truffle and foie gras. The cooking classes are, in themselves, gourmet dining experiences.
