Salvador in Bahia, Brazil
Intense rhythm of the Carnival
Salvador, state of Bahia, is a wonderful place to visit in Brazil, mainly in this period, summer time together with the intense rhythm of the Carnival.
The sun shines almost year-round in Salvador. Beneath the surface beauty of beaches and the island-studded Baía de Todos os Santos (Bay of All Saints), there's a deep and powerful culture - one that bubbles up in the area's rich cuisine and in the infectious and ever-changing rhythms of Bahian music.
The internationally famous Carnival is held each year and is quite unique. It is held over seven days in February with over 200 Carnival bands parading through the streets.
Blasting out live music across the city, the so-called “trio elétricos” are large decorated trailers with very loud sound equipment. They parade slowly along the set street circuits (Campo Grande to Praça Castro Alves) and (Barra to Ondina).
Besides being an old colonial town, Salvador has beautiful beaches with palm trees and white dunes, which are the site of intense social activity. To the North, up the Costa dos Coqueiros on the Linha Verde (Green Line) route, you' will find many resorts and hideaways: Praia do Forte with its rhea birds and giant sea turtles. At the local Modelo market, a familiar sight is the "baiana", usually an older woman dressed in the traditional white, pleated dresses of colonial Bahia, who sells coconut sweets and spicy "vatapas", "acarajés" from a tray that she carries to the market on her head.
